Hundreds gather on University of Texas campus for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The MLK Statue on UT"s campus in Austin was the starting point for those who wanted to celebrate the life or Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and honor his legacy. FOX 7 Austin's Amanda Ruiz has the story.

Austin celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with its annual festival and march.

The Austin Area Heritage Council organized the events beginning with remarks at the MLK statue on the East Mall of The University of Texas campus. 

The cappella group Voices of Afrika, composed of students in the Texas African Students Organization performed, and after the program, the community marched to Huston-Tillotson University.

Many of those who attended said they wanted to honor the legacy of Dr. King and celebrate his life.

"It's not just an opportunity for us to come out and get some steps on our Apple Watch, but it is a chance for us to think about what we're going to do next, to galvanize, to mobilize, to improve the city of Austin, this great state and ultimately America," said Melva Williams.
