AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - For the past few months Vanessa Trevino has called the I-35 underpass home.
She’s one of thousands of people in Austin currently experiencing homelessness.
Trevino says life on the streets has been a little easier since the city passed an ordinance allowing people experiencing homelessness to legally camp on Austin streets.
But not everyone is on board with the city's decision.
Recently an online petition was started to rescind the homeless camping ordinance in Austin and so far more than 10,000 people have signed it.
Travis County GOP chairman Matt Mackowiak is leading the charge.
Mackowiak says the ordinance has caused chaos and believes the policy will result in a similar homeless crisis that other larger cities are currently facing.
Mackowiak says he's planning on taking the petition to City Hall on August 8th and hopes he will be able to present his case against the ordinance.
