Through her tears, the mother of a man killed in northwest Austin is asking for the public's help to identify the suspect.

"They took away somebody very special," said Jessica Valdez, Matthew Torres’ mom. "He was only good to everybody."

Torres was 25 years old.

"The kind of man that we needed in this world," said Valdez.

Man dies in shooting in northwest Austin

Police are investigating a fatal shooting in northwest Austin that left one person dead.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office said he was shot inside his apartment complex off U.S. 183 and Copper Creek last Friday.

"It's very tragic," said John Foster, the commander over the Criminal Investigations Division at the Williamson County Sheriff's Office. "This was a young man just starting his career, starting his life and at this point in the investigation nothing has shown us that this was a mutual type deal."

A week after his death, detectives went back out to the crime scene, searching for anything that might tell them who pulled the trigger.

"We’ve passed out over 300 flyers here, we’ve knocked on almost every door," said Foster. "I feel very confident at this point in the investigation with the tips that we’ve gotten so far. I feel confident that this will come to a close."

But they’re still asking for help.

"What we’re doing here today is just trying to ask the public if they saw anything or know anything to please contact us," said Foster.

Even the smallest tip might give Torres’ family the answer they so desperately seek.

"If you know anything, seen anything, heard anything, know anyone, please, like I said, just come forward, let someone know," said Valdez.

The sheriff’s office said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

They believe this was an isolated incident.

A cash reward may be possible for a tip that helps the sheriff’s office solve this case.
