A North Austin man is asking the city to place stop signs or speed cushions in his neighborhood after having two cars crash into his yard. Winston Cundiff first built a fence around his home to protect his children while they play in the front yard. It's become a crash site for two cars in the past four months.
The first crash was in April, Cundiff said a police chase led a suspect to slam into his tree and flip upside down across his yard. The second time, someone was speeding down Ohlen road and took the turn toward his street too hard. "My head didn't quite wrap around of what just happened until I just saw, the vehicle upside down and the person inside of it," said Cundiff.
"It's always been a pretty high traffic, traffic street the speeding over the past couple of years has seem to have gotten a lot worse and the traffic has gotten a lot worse." Cundiff said the damage has been costly, he had to pay more than $400 dollars to fix his fence the first time but the wiring and the leftover car parts can be taken care of. Cundiff just wants the area to be safer for his family.
"I walk my daughter and my dog through the neighborhood and I try to spend as little time on Ohlen road as I can because people drive so fast up and down it," said Cundiff.
Drivers will cut off the highway and speed into the neighborhood until they hit Burnet Road.
Cundiff would like to see stop signs and speed cushions along Ohlen Road.
However, the Local Area Traffic Management program is on pause, "the program is currently undergoing revisions to address minimum qualification criteria," until the end of this year.
Cundiff has contacted Austin 311 to voice his concerns.
A city spokesperson said they cannot comment at this time until they've reviewed Cundiff's request.
