Off-duty San Antonio ISD officer killed trying to break up fight at IHOP
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - According to KSAT, an off-duty school police officer in San Antonio was attacked and then intentionally ran over, resulting in his death early Saturday morning.
Detective Cliff Martinez was working as a security guard at an IHOP in San Antonio when a fight broke out. Martinez was able to move the fight outside of the restaurant, where it continued in the parking lot.
Authorities say that once outside, two men assaulted Martinez, got into a vehicle and purposely ran him over, pinning him under the vehicle. Martinez was pronounced dead on the scene.
According to KSAT, one man has been arrested in connection with Martinez's death. 23-year-old Jorge Lopez has been charged with capital murder and is suspected to be the driver of the vehicle that ran over MArtinez.
Martinez had a long history with the force, working for the San Antonio ISD for 27 years.
