Man shot, killed by deputy for holding his wife at gunpoint: TCSO

A man was killed in a deadly deputy-involved shooting in Leander, the Travis County Sheriff's Office said.

What happened?

The backstory:

The sheriff's office said on Tuesday, Jan. 28, around 4:17 p.m., deputies responded to a home in the 14200 block of FM 2769 after a caller said he needed assistance at his parents' home.

The caller, who was out of state, said his mother was being held at gunpoint by his father.

When deputies arrived at the home, they heard a woman screaming inside the home.

TCOS said the deputies entered the home and saw an elderly couple. The man was holding a gun to the woman's head. When deputies asked the man to drop his weapon, he refused.

Due to the man not listening to the commands, and seeing the wife being held at gunpoint, a deputy shot the man to save the woman.

The man was killed, TCSO said.

No one else was injured in the shooting.

What they're saying:

"This a tragedy, and it's something that no one would want to go through," Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez said.

"Situations like these are unusual and they're highly emotional. This is something a deputy never wants to have to do, but they're trained in a situation when a person's life is at stake to make that call," Kristen Dark, public information officer with TCSO, said.

What's next:

A full investigation is underway by the Texas Rangers.

TCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division and TCSO Internal Affairs Unit are also conducting parallel investigations.

The deputy who shot their gun will be placed on administrative leave as the investigation continues.
