Over 150 people join together to clean up litter for MLK Day of Service
AUSTIN, Texas - Approximately 160 people worked to clean up litter in East Austin Saturday morning, as part of the annual MLK Day of Service, through the United Way.
The non-profit teams up with “Keep Austin Beautiful,” for the event.
Volunteers split up into small groups and fan out in the neighborhood surrounding the United Way. Since 1981, the non-profit has been located on MLK Boulevard.
According to a release, the organization takes great pride in honoring Dr. King’s legacy, mobilizing volunteers for the clean up each year.
Among the volunteers were Stephanie Downs -- it was her first year volunteering, and she said she would “definitely” be back. “I really like it. I think there’s something really cathartic about it.” she laughed.
Isa White, has volunteered at the clean up for several years. She says it’s a great way to make friends -- and a positive community event.
“It’s important that something like this is happening consecutively,” she said.
The event is family-friendly and accompanied children of all ages are welcome.
