AUSTIN, Texas - Despite stormy weather and COVID-19, people across Central Texas spend the morning and afternoon paying their respects to fallen servicemen and women on Memorial Day.
Family, friends and fellow servicemen and women filled Cook-Walden Cemetery Monday afternoon.
"Today is the day we mourn, we cry, for our military brothers and sisters who knew what the price was and acted in a gallant manner," said Victor Gonzales, mayor of Pflugerville.
One part of the ceremony was reading out the oath each serviceman and woman has to make before joining, and those at the ceremony were assured that those they were honoring lived up to that oath.
Jeff Clark, with VFW District 28, said Memorial Day is a day of mixed emotions “It can most certainly be acknowledged as the most solemn day set aside for recognition," Clark said.
On a day filled with reflection and honor, dedications to those no longer with them filled the ceremony.

Ceremonies like it happened across Central Texas. In Manor, others gathered to pay their respects.
"Here at the cemetery on Memorial Day, this is one of the many ways we want to show our support for those who came from Manor, that are veterans of Manor," said Mayor Larry Wallace Jr.

Many were out placing flags, which serve as a symbol that even beyond death, their nation still remembers their service. Because even as the world faces uncertainty, one thing remains true, those who have been laid to rest always need to be honored.
