Another family has reached out to FOX 7. They've started a petition for even harsher penalties for runaway drivers. The Jarmon family is fighting for justice, justice for Gisele Jarmon or "Gigi".
"This time it was my sister, next time it could be anyone," says Takiesha Jarmon, Gisele's sister.
23-year-old Gisele Jarmon was walking in her hometown of San Angelo when she was struck and killed this past June. Her body wasn't found until several hours later.
After collecting evidence from the scene, police were able to track down the suspect.
"Accidents, they do happen, we understand that. Whenever you leave someone there after you hit them, and you leave, that's when it becomes a crime at that time," Takiesha says.
"Even though you probably didn't plan on taking someone's life but when you failed to render aid or didn't call for help, it's a crime. There needs to be punishment for that," Takiesha adds.
Court documents show the runaway driver was texting around the time of the crash.
Police charged him with failure to stop and render aid but the family doesn't think that's enough.
"At the minimum, we would like to see license suspended, licensed revoked and some type of jail time. If you take someone's life, there's no reason why you should be out of jail in less than 24 hours," says Takiesha.
The family spoke with FOX 7 about their "Justice for Gigi" campaign. They've started an online petition which will be sent to several state lawmakers saying they want to see change.
The petition already gotten more than 700 signatures.
"If there were stricter laws, I think there would be less people that would fail to render aid because they know what the penalties are and it would save a life. If you've done it once and nothing happens to you, it's a high chance it will happen again," says Takiesha.
Gigi was special needs. Her family says she was one-of-a-kind.
"She got along with everybody. She loved being around family and people. Once you meet Gisele, you will never forget her. It's just so hard for us to try to go through every day without her," says Raymond Jarmon, Gig's father.
"As a mother, it's been very, very hard. I took care of her daily, every day. I mean, she was like my shadow. It's been very, very hard for me," says Babs Jarmon, Gig's mother.
After getting over the initial shock of losing Gigi, her family knew they had to seek justice not only for Gigi but for other victims.
"We're going to keep reaching out to them until we seem some type of change. It's not going to go away over night," says Takiesha.
