Man found in car crash dies from gunshot wounds, police say

The Austin Police Department (APD) is investigating a suspicious death in East Austin.

Police said it happened Wednesday afternoon in the 5800 block of Techni Center Dr.

When officers arrived, they found a man who crashed his car into a gate and had injuries.

The driver, Carlos Calleja, appeared to have gunshot wounds, and police said he later died at the scene.

Investigators determined that someone shot Calleja before his vehicle crashed into the gate.

The suspect is unknown at this time.

"There was apparent trauma to the individual's body and at this time it is being investigated as a suspicious death," officials said.

They haven't determined if the man lived in the apartment complex or just happened to crash there. Police say it's an isolated incident.

"Honestly, it's not surprising. This happens a lot. I don't like it though," neighbor Rotenja Law said, referring to the police presence.

APD crime data shows 14 aggravated assaults reports at 5800 Techni Center Drive from the beginning of 2022 to the present. The majority of them are domestic violence cases.

"This is still early on in the investigation, so they're just now processing the scene," police said.

"I'm pretty used to stuff like this, like it happens all the time over here," Law said.
