NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas - A New Braunfels police officer was injured Tuesday night while attempting to detain a teen runaway, says the New Braunfels Police Department.
According to a release, officers responded to the 1300 block of Azalea Lane around 10:20 p.m. on July 3 for a report of a 16-year-old runaway at that location. Officers attempted to detain him, so they could return him to his family, but he resisted and fought back.
During the struggle, an officer's leg and ankle were seriously injured and the teen was able to flee on foot, says NBPD.
Additional officers and a Texas DPS helicopter were called to the area to search for him, and around 11:40 p.m., he was spotted hiding in some brush in a backyard in the 1300 block of Poppy Lane. He was put in handcuffs and taken for juvenile processing. He also resisted being searched which resulted in an additional charge, says the release.
The teen has been charged with first-degree felony aggravated assault on a public servant, third-degree felony evading arrest causing serious bodily injury, and resisting arrest, search or transport, a Class A misdemeanor.
The officer was transported to Resolute Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. He has since been released.
