Rare albino whale spotted -- with a new calf
BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR, Mexico - Marine biologists have spotted a rare albino gray whale off Mexico's Pacific coast.
Footage shared by Mexico's National Commission for Natural Protected Areas shows the magnificent creature swimming with her calf in the El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve off the coast of Baja California.
The bright white whale had garnered the nickname "Gallon of Milk" but hadn’t been spotted since 2009 -- until observers spotted her with the new calf.
Albinism is a genetic disorder that results in an absence of the pigment melanin. It's rarely spotted in marine mammals.
