Rescheduled Austin MLK festival to take place Saturday

Organizers are gearing up for the rescheduled Martin Luther King, Jr. festival this weekend.

The backstory:

The event was originally scheduled for Jan. 20, but was postponed because of weather.

The MLK march and festival has been an Austin tradition for 32 years, with people traveling from all over to take part in remembering Dr. King.

Past years have included a march that represents social justice and celebration. However, this year's march was canceled.

The festival will still feature vendors and local musicians.

The festival's coordinator, Joya Hayes, says this event is a great way to connect with your neighbors and reflect on the impact Martin Luther King, Jr. has had on our lives.

What they're saying:

"When we celebrate MLK, we're also creating an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of our African-American community," Hayes said. "But it's also civil rights. It's social justice. It's everything that represents creating and sustaining places where people are loved and respected and their contributions to society continue to be respected."

What you can do:

The event runs from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday and Huston-Tillotson University.

Organizers are asking those attending to donate to the Central Texas Food Bank, if possible.

They hope to bring the march back next year.
