San Antonio Zoo provides new, virtual version of Dream Night for pediatric patients

SAN ANTONIO - Due to the coronavirus outbreak, many businesses have had to make decisions and changes to their operations and events, including the San Antonio Zoo.

This year, the zoo says it has teamed up with the University Health System and the Children's Hospital of San Antonio to bring a virtual version of Dream Night, a VIP event for children with special medical needs which provides them a chance to enjoy the zoo without concern for social stigma or issues.

The video will be played on a closed-circuit television program in each of their rooms, allowing the patients and their families to learn more about the animals from the comfort and safety of their hospital rooms.

“For the past two years, we have been privileged to provide an experience like none other in an intimate setting where these families can be at the zoo stress-free,” said Tim Morrow, President & CEO, San Antonio Zoological Society. “We missed seeing the wonder and excitement of these young patients, but we are excited to share a new virtual experience where they can learn more about the animals from the team who cares for them.”

According to the San Antonio Zoo, the concept for "Dream Night at the Zoo" began in 1996 at the Rotterdam Zoo in the Netherlands when animal keepers acknowledged how rarely children diagnosed with cancer were able to visit the zoo. Families of these medically frail children often had other expenses to meet, had difficulty finding the free time to visit, had the obstacle of being stared at, or dealing with people's reactions.

Dream Night was developed so these children and their families could have a relaxing and fun experience while at the zoo.  The idea has spanned worldwide, with over 248 zoos around the world participating, including the San Antonio Zoo.

“We are so encouraged by the San Antonio Zoo thinking of creative ways to reach our patients through a virtual version of Dream Night,” said Cris Daskevich, CEO of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “These opportunities mean so much to our patients and their families, and this particular experience could very well be what fuels our future conservationists, zoo curators, or veterinarians.
