School bus crash on northbound frontage road of I-35
Six people are hurt, including two children, after a crash involving three cars and an AISD school bus.
It was anything but a normal route home for students on one Austin ISD school bus on Tuesday.
"There was an initial bump where everyone was kind of jolted around. I hit my face on the seat, that's why I've got this. I bit my lip. Then it was bumping a bit more but it wasn't as hard as the first one," says Walker Gossett, student.
The bus was leaving Kealing Middle School and traveling on the I35 N service road near Reinli Street. AISD Police say that's when a sedan went into the buses lane, striking it and causing it to lose control. The bus veered to the right and hit a telephone pole. Many parents quickly showed up to the scene.
"I was relieved that the first thing he said was, 'mom I'm okay but my bus has been an accident.' I at least had that knowledge from him. He did say he thought some people were injured but he didn't think anyone was seriously. I tried to be calm," says Kristin Gossett, parent.
There were 31 students on the bus.
16 were slightly injured but none were taken to the hospital.
"We have the students checked through EMS to make sure everybody is fine. If a transport is required, then at that time EMS will make that decision along with the parents," says Chris Evoy, AISD Police.
Two children in a sedan were taken to Dell Children's Medical Center. Four adults were also sent to the hospital. Austin Police is heading the investigation.
The Texas Education Agency has a bus accident reporting system. It shows that Austin ISD reported 15 school bus accidents within the 2014-2015 school year.
