Scooter speeds to be limited to 8 mph in parts of UT campus
AUSTIN, Texas (FOX 7 Austin) - Scooters in specific areas of the University of Texas will be limited to 8 mph starting Tuesday, according to Bike UT, the university's bike program.
Bike UT said that Bird, Jump, Lime and Lyft will use geofencing to implement a maximum speed of 8 mph.
The geofencing is another addition to the list of rules for the popular mode of transportation. On the UT campus, scooters can only be used where bicycle traffic is allowed. Scooters also must yield right-of-way to pedestrians and follow all the rules of the road, such as stopping at stop signs and lights and yielding. Scooters are also only allowed to be parked at bike racks or designated scooter spaces, or violators could be fined up to $150.
A map of the areas where reduced speeds will be enforced is available online along with a complete list of the current scooter rules for the UT campus.
