AUSTIN, Texas - 46-year-old Mauricio Gonzalez-Campos has been arrested and charged with indecency with a child, a second-degree felony after a family member went to the police and said she was inappropriately touched by him in 1993.
For serious charges such as sexual performance by a child, the statute of limitations is typically 20 years. However, there's no Texas statute of limitations for sexual assault of a child or indecency with a child.
The statute of limitations protects individuals from being prosecuted or punished for committing alleged crimes in the distant past.
According to police, officers were initially notified of the sexual abuse in January 2020. The victim, now 37 years old, told police that the abuse happened when she was 11 years old while she was staying at her grandparents' house on Doc Holliday Trail in North Austin. According to the victim, she was spending the weekend with her grandparents because her father worked nights and her mother was out of town.
The victim told police that she was sleeping in bed with two other female kids when Gonzalez-Campos pulled her out of bed and took her to the bathroom. Gonzalez-Campos touched the victim's breasts and vaginal area over her clothing, according to the affidavit.
The victim said after Gonzalez-Campos stopped, he told her not to tell anyone.

A second incident happened with Gonzalez-Campos later in the weekend, according to the affidavit. The victim said she begged her grandparents to let her sleep with them because she wanted to avoid Gonzalez-Campos, but she wasn't allowed. The victim said she was sleeping in the living room with other kids when Gonzalez-Campos again pulled her out and touched her breasts and vaginal area.
Detectives with the Austin Police Department spoke with Gonzalez-Campos about the incidents from 1993. He acknowledged that he had intentions of touching the victim but alleges the victim stopped him from doing it.
