When officers arrived, they found a 16-year-old teen on the ground with a gunshot wound. He died from his injuries.

"Austin police officers, along with personnel from EMS and the Austin Fire Department, attempted to perform life-saving measures," said Leah Ratliff is a PIO for the Austin Police Department. "Unfortunately, the victim was pronounced deceased at 9:01 p.m."

The victim was later identified as Ahsun Madison.

Officers were able to identify the suspect as a 16-year-old Hispanic male.

The investigation showed the suspect shot Madison at the apartment complex and then left the scene. He was later found and arrested for murder.

APD investigating 48th homicide of the year

At around 8:20 p.m. on September 30, several 9-1-1 calls were received about an incident in the 9100 block of Northgate Boulevard.

The suspect was also involved in multiple shootings in the area earlier this year.

Jeremy Rosenthal is a criminal defense lawyer in Collin County, who commented on the legal process for minors who commit serious crimes in Texas.

"It sounds like this young man has been in trouble before, sounds like he's somebody that's known to the police, he's on their radar," said Jeremy Rosenthal. "If we're talking about juvenile certification, it's very likely that they will ask that he be tried as an adult."

Police said the suspect was involved in the death of 21-year-old Francisco Muntufa Miranda. He was not the shooter, but was present during the shooting.

"Not shocked that the gang unit is involved," said Rosenthal. "It sounds like he is kind of one of the, if you will, one of the usual suspects."

A 13-year-old was arrested for that murder in March and for his role in a drive-by shooting dating back to December 2023.

"The court does revisit these things, but it would be very surprising if this young man got released," said Rosenthal. "I think he's going to be in custody for quite a while."

Police said when they caught him, he was already out on bond for prior shootings. They are not releasing his identity because he is a minor.

APD confirmed the victim and shooter knew each other.
