DALLAS - A 40-year-old woman was killed early Friday morning after Dallas County sheriff's deputies say a woman slammed into the back of her car.
The driver then ran from the scene, but sheriff's deputies were able to track down the hit-and-run suspect.
19-year-old Maria Miralrio is charged with causing an accident involving death. The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the 40-year-old woman killed in the crash. The teenage suspect is being held at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center.
The crash happened just after 12:30 a.m. in the eastbound lane of I-30 in Downtown Dallas. Investigators say Miralrio was speeding in a Dodge Challenger when it rear-ended the victim's Nissan Altima, causing the driver to lose control, flip several times and crash.
The driver of the twisted and mangled Altima died on the scene after it wrapped around a portion of an interstate sign support beam. Investigators say the suspect was not injured in the crash and ran away from the scene.
"They were able to run the registration, and they saw it was registered to a certain individual and a residence was listed,” explained Melinda Urbina with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. “And when I went to the residence, that individual was there and she did admit to being the driver of that vehicle and that she fled the scene.”
Investigators do not believe alcohol was a factor in this fatal crash. Miralrio is being held on a $25,000 bond.
