Terminal Six bar on 6th Street to close after NYE shooting

Two people were injured after being shot on 6th Street early on New Year's Day. Austin-Travis County EMS says one was shot in the arm, the other in the leg, both are expected to be ok.

“It actually caught me by surprise a little bit because Chief Manley and the department had come up with an action plan when we were having so many shootings several months ago downtown." Ken Casaday, president of the Austin Police Association said the shooting. It occurred at the Terminal Six bar, a bar he said, that continues to cause problems for cops.

“I've spoken with community activists who are talking about holding a future press conference and trying to get that place shut down,” said Casaday. “It consistently has a lot of gunplay, they do an absolute poor job on security and it just needs to go,” he said.

Casaday said closing the night club would take several steps. First working with the TABC to get their liquor license taken away.

He hopes new ownership can make a change. Earlier this year, the Austin Police Department formed a gang unit that Casaday said has been making a huge difference downtown.

“Over the last four months they've done a fantastic job they've made lots of arrests, they've arrested several people with guns, several people selling narcotics down there trying to take advantage of the homeless people,” said Casaday.

Casaday says ultimately closing terminal six will be in the city's best interest. “All the violence for the past several months seems to be centered around that bar,” he said.

The bar’s management tells Fox 7, the bar will be voluntarily closed permanently. The owner plans to sell it.
