AUSTIN, Texas - A 30-year tradition at the University of Texas has come to an end this year. The Texas Exes chose not to hold their annual torchlight march ahead of the Texas vs. OU football game.
Though there weren’t torches, the Texas Exes Alumni Association still had everyone fired up at the annual Texas Fight Rally.
The rally is held leading into the Longhorns vs. Sooners football game every year. Speakers included senior football players and coach Tom Herman. Cheerleaders and the Longhorn band helped get the crowd going.
This year the Texas Exes decided not to include the torch march because they are concerned it could be misconstrued. The Exes want to make sure they send a more inclusive message.
A statement from the University read in part: "In light of the tragic events in Charlottesville, we will not be doing a torchlight parade. This night has always been a positive experience for the UT community and it is paramount to us that everyone feels welcome, safe, and part of the Longhorn family."
Some students at the rally said they agreed with the decision.
"What's happening right now with everything that's going on that's probably the safest move,” UT freshman Abhi Pal said. “It's a safe move to play by the school."
The Exes say they are unsure if the torchlight march will be included again in the future.
The Red River showdown is this Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas.
