The trial against a former AISD bus driver accused of sexually assaulting a student in 2015 began Tuesday.
Authorities say Leon Young targeted a 6-year-old who rode his bus. Young was a driver for the district for about three years before being fired after his arrest. He began Tuesday's trial by pleading not guilty.
Opening statements were heard:
"The parents of the Walnut Creek Elementary School students trustingly, willingly handed their children over to the care of this man, Leon Young, the bus driver," said Kathleen Morgan the prosecutor.
Prosecutors said Young used candy to gain the trust of the kids on his bus back in 2015 and even hugged them. Officials said he eventually singled out a 6-year-old and sexually assaulted her.
Defense attorneys admitting at the trial, Young did give candy and hugs to students but nothing more came from it.
"He made an incredibly bad decision to start giving candy to children and he made an even worse decision because he was told never to touch any children on the bus. He would hug them; he would tickle them. Very bad choice, but that is not criminal," said Raymond Espersen, a defense attorney
According to court documents, the incident was reported to police by two students back in April 2015 after saying they saw what happened.
On Tuesday, jurors heard from witnesses, relatives and a former teacher of the school district before concluding for the day in the afternoon. Young's hearing will continue Wednesday morning at 9.
