UT student section empty during OSU game

AUSTIN, Texas - One thing was apparent at this past weekend's Texas Longhorn's football game. Many students didn't show up.

It caught the attention of Texas head coach Tom Herman, who said at a press conference Monday morning that it's disappointing.

The big question: how are we going to fill the student section back up? Coach Herman said they have a few ideas, including the football team being more involved with the student body.

When it comes to Saturday's game against Oklahoma State, it wasn't just a loss in football, it was a loss in student engagement.

"I was disappointed. You know, we've got to win. Everybody loves a winner, so some of that's on us. I was disappointed that, you know, we had performed to the point where the students had that kind of apathy for it," said Texas head coach Tom Herman.

They were already coming out of a tough loss against Oklahoma during the Red River Rivalry. The final score was 24 to 29. Their record so far this season: 3 wins, four losses. That includes a loss on Saturday.

"I guess if they're not excited, we're not excited," said UT student.

"Just finish the games out, it's been like the past three games that we haven't been able to close. That's obviously a key point," said David Cantu, freshman.

Freshman David Cantu has gone to all home games except for this last one. He says losing isn't the main reason why he believes students didn't show up to the 11:00 a.m. game.

"Early morning games are the death of college students. So if college football fixes that, then I think we're good," said Cantu.

Coach Tom Herman was asked about the giant hole in the south end zone of the stadium.

"We've got to do a better job, I've got to do a better job, endearing ourselves to the student body. I thought we did that, with different student appreciation practices in the spring and the different things our team has been involved with as far as the students," said Herman.

Some say they like that idea and believe it could help.

"We don't see them as students; we see them as football players. So I guess if we connected to them on more a student level, then maybe we would be more excited about personally supporting them. Rather than, 'oh it's our football team, we have to support them,'" said UT student.

The next two games are away against Baylor and TCU. The Longhorns will be back home again on November 11th playing Kansas. That is a team we have a high chance of beating.
