WASHINGTON - Police are searching for the people responsible for a carjacking while a woman was filling up her vehicle at a gas station in Southeast D.C.
D.C. police say the unarmed carjacking happened at around 5:41 p.m. Sunday at the BP gas station located in the 800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue.
Surveillance video released by police shows what appears to be a silver-colored Toyota four-door car backing into a spot at a gas pump right next to the victim’s Lexus car. A suspect gets out of the driver’s side of the Toyota and enters the victim’s Lexus through the unlocked passenger-side door.
The suspect then proceeded to lock the victim out of her car and drove away from the gas station heading eastbound on Pennsylvania Avenue, according to police. The Toyota vehicle with another person inside also drove off from the scene.
Police say the victim’s Lexus was later recovered.
This incident is similar to another carjacking that took place on the Fourth of July. In that incident, two suspects carjacked the girlfriend of D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson while she was pumping gas at an Exxon gas station located in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue in Southeast D.C. It is unknown if these carjackings are related.
According to AAA, D.C. has had more than 160 carjackings between January and July in 2018.
Anyone with information about the suspects or the Toyota car used during the carjacking is asked to call police at 202-727-9099 or by texting the tip to the department's text tip line at 50411.
