CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Something unusual was spotted out on a Valley freeway Wednesday morning: a golf cart heading the wrong way -- and it turns out the driver of the cart has ended up on the freeway before.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety tweeted a photo of the cart just before 5:30 a.m. They received a call about the golf cart heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of Santan Loop 202 at McQueen. The driver then proceeded to exit the freeway at Arizona Avenue.
DPS troopers and Chandler police officers attempted to stop the driver, but he kept going. They were later able to box him in and stop him.
"The driver, an 83-year-old, was confused as to what was going on and made statements he thought he was leaving a meeting. He was cleared by medical and we transported him home. He does have mental health issues associated with old age," stated DPS Trooper Kameron Lee.
DPS says this is the same man who drove his golf cart on Interstate 10 back in July. At that time, he was seen on Arizona Department of Transportation cameras making his way along the highway near Wild Horse Pass. In that incident, a good samaritan stayed behind him until troopers were able to get to the scene and stop him.
