The Boston Celtics are being purchased by an investor group led by Bill Chisholm for a staggering $6.1 billion, marking the largest sale for a sports franchise in the U.S.

Chisholm is the managing partner at Symphony Technology Group, and agreed to purchase the Celtics from the Grousbeck family, according to ESPN NBA insider and reporter Shams Charania.

Boston Celtics record sale

What we know:

Bill Chisholm's purchase of the Celtics is the largest for an American sports franchise in history, barely surpassing the Washington Commanders’ sale of $6.05 billion to the Josh Harris group in July 2023, the New York Post reported.

The Celtics went on sale in July 2024, a few days after the team won the NBA championship. The franchise has been owned by a consortium led by the Grousbeck family since 2002.

Wyc Grousbeck, the Celtics current governor, will remain in that role and as CEO through the 2027-2028 NBA season, The New York Times reported.

Chisholm is a long-time Celtics fan and grew up on Boston’s North Shore.

What we don't know:

It's unknown when the deal will be closed and how the deal will be structured, said a person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side had made any public announcement of the agreement.
