It's the first year for the Manor New Tech football team and the Titans have an uphill battle ahead but they say it's a small price to pay to make school history.
"I see some of the guys they're excited about it. Some of the younger guys I can tell there's some nervousness. Some fright in their eyes when we talk about playing on Friday nights," says Manor New Tech Boys Athletic Coordinator Quincy Williams.
The nerves stem from the fact that they'll be playing varsity football for the first time in school history.
"This is a complete startup. So we're coaching a lot. It's a lot of coaching. It's taking baby steps," Williams says.
Sophomore linebacker Nate Silva says, "Very exciting because we're the first. The first thing in our school to have an athletic program. We get to be the first generation to do this stuff, and future generations can look back at it."
Being a first year program on the varsity level is definitely going to be tough for Manor New Tech. It's especially tough because they'll be playing in District 10-3A with defending state champion Rockdale and traditional powerhouse Cameron Yoe.
What's even more challenging is that among the 40 plus players, excluding freshmen, only a handful have played in the last two years.
Senior receiver/defensive back Aaron King says, "Some of us have experience. So we're ready. We've been ready. We haven't played football for this school at all yet. So we're making history. We're ready for varsity."
For those who don't have experience this is their chance.
"I never played before. My uncles and my mom tried to get me into it. But I would always move schools. So I really couldn't get into it," sophomore defensive back David Medina says. "Then I heard they were gonna have a first year program over here. So I wanted to jump in. I always wanted to be a varsity football player. I never knew I was gonna be one my sophomore year though."
Williams says that it's all about making sure the guys feel comfortable with what they're doing and it'll all come together on the field.
