Lake Travis football wins 6th state championship
*Update* ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Charlie Brewer passed for 361 yards and four touchdowns, leading Lake Travis to a 41-13 victory over The Woodlands for the Class 6A Division I championship on December 17.
The Texas Associated Press Sports Editors player of the year joined his older brother, Michael Brewer, and his grandfather, Charlie Brewer, as Texas high school champions. Michael Brewer won two titles at Lake Travis, and Charlie's Brewer's granddad led Lubbock High School to the 1951 title.
Lake Travis (15-1) won its first title in the state's largest classification after winning a state-record five straight crowns from 2007-11 in the old Class 4A, now 5A. Michael Brewer won two of those.
The Woodlands (15-1) — which beat Allen, the No. 1 team in the final Associated Press, in the semifinals — dropped to 0-2 in state finals. The other loss was to Galena Park North Shore in 2003.
From 2007 to 2011 the Lake Travis football program won a UIL record five straight state titles. Now after a recent move up to the state's biggest classification, Class 6A, the team is a win away from championship number six!
Coach Hank Carter got close in 2015 but lost to Katy in the state championship game. This year he's back and Carter’s 14-1 Cavs will meet the undefeated Woodlands at the home of the Dallas Cowboys.
Even though Lake Travis has five previous titles there's still school history up for grabs because the Cavs have never won it all in 6A.
Coach Carter says, "When we moved to 6A it creates a whole new set of challenges for us. So, it's time to do it. We got a great opportunity here. A tremendous senior class and great juniors and sophomores sprinkled in to. So we need to go out and make the most of our opportunity."
The players agree with Carter.
Player Charlie Brewer says, "Definitely be awesome to be a part of that and make history at our school in that way. So all the guys are really excited. Gotta have a good week of practice and good week of preparation. And hopefully we can get it done."
Maleek Barley is not only hoping to get it done and get a win but thinks it could possibly start another streak. "We'll just start the trend for everyone else and see if they can just keep going on from that. And then see what happens forward in that."
