Lake Travis wins 6A girls golf state title

Several Austin-area high school golf teams were swinging for state titles including the Lake Travis girls who were led by a junior who recently played an LPGA event.

Kristen Gillman settled in after a whirlwind tour in San Francisco. A birdie on 18 helped her finish even par for the tourney which was good enough for a third place individual finish.

Gillman's teammate Kaitlyn Papp, a future Longhorn, finished one under in her 36 holes for second individually, just two back.

The Cavs beat Coppell by eight strokes to win its second state title in the last three years.

Both Gillman and Papp say they likely wouldn't change a thing for the team gold they helped earn.

Gillman said, "It's been awesome because I just enjoyed every second of it and I just had so much fun with all of it. It's awesome because that's really what we came down here to do and it just means a lot to be able to win."

"It's really exciting because I know a couple of years ago as an 8th grader, the team brought home the State Championship and just to be a part of that this year is really special," Papp added.

Other area schools also placed at state. The Vandegrift girls finished third in Class 5A and Lampasas also finished third in 4A.
