Austin weather: Heavy rain and potential flash flooding in store this weekend

Conditions will be warm and humid today and tomorrow, but beginning Friday night into Saturday morning Central Texas will see a storm system bringing heavy rain and potential flash flooding.

There will be less rain today and more sun after the clouds/fog/drizzle trio goes away by mid-morning.

The summer-like feeling will make a comeback with highs near 90 and high humidity making it feel even warmer.

It will be mainly dry again on Friday and then the rain faucet turns on this weekend and stays on.

Future rain totals, severe weather threat and flooding risk are all trending up for the weekend.

The National Weather Service has already issued a Flood Watch from Friday, May 12 at 7 p.m. to Saturday, May 13 at 8 p.m. for the following counties: Gillespie, Hays, Bastrop, Caldwell, Lee, Blanco, Travis, Llano, Burnet, Williamson, and Fayette.

The National Weather Service has also issued a Flood Watch from Friday, May 12 at 7 p.m. to Saturday, May 13 at 7 p.m. for Bell, Milam and Lampasas Counties.

The City of Austin urges residents to be prepared for the possible severe flooding this weekend. Officials advise residents to clean out their drains and gutters, keep drainage easements clear of debris, and to not dump brush into creeks and open channels.

The City also advises residents to gather supplies to last for several days, including non-perishable foods, cleaning supplies and water, in case utility services are interrupted. While travel is discouraged, travelers are advised to stay away from creeks, trails, culverts, ponds and other drainage infrastructure. About 75 percent of flood fatalities occur in vehicles.
