Austin police investigating suspicious death in southwest Austin

A person walked into the Sunset Valley Police Department and reported about a deceased body in a wooded area.

AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Police Department is investigating a suspicious death in southwest Austin.

According to APD, officers responded to a check welfare call around 8:47 a.m. in the 5900 block of S. Mopac Expressway. A person walked into the Sunset Valley Police Department and reported about a deceased body in a wooded area.

A male victim was found with trauma to his body so the incident is being investigated as a suspicious death, says APD. The investigation is ongoing and the scene is active and expected to remain active for the next few hours.

Austin police say a large homeless camp is nearby in the woods, and that the camp has been evacuated while police investigate.

The victim has not been fully identified and Austin police are asking for the public's help in case they know anything about the death.
