Austin's only sensory-safe indoor gym closing
AUSTIN, Texas - We Rock the Spectrum - Austin is the only thing of its kind here in Austin. It's an indoor gym for kids with special needs to have a fun place to play and feel accepted.
Unfortunately, Thursday was the gym's last day and soon it will be closed for good unless someone steps up and takes over.
“I feel like there's plenty of play places within Austin that are indoors, but not every place expects your child,” said gym director Milan Calloway.
We Rock the Spectrum is an international franchise. Two years ago, Calloway brought We Rock the Spectrum to Austin after seeing a need for it.
“My goal was always to build a play place where kids of all needs could interact and socialize, no matter their age,” said Calloway.\

Since then, Calloway says they have opened their doors to at least a couple thousand children with special needs.
“These kids have really grown with us so I think that's my favorite part. My favorite is just being so baffled and floored by what they learned and the social connections that they've made,” she said.

Due to personal reasons, Calloway is having to close the gym.
“I'm devastated. I say that with a smile as a defense mechanism, but yeah, like these kids are my kids,” said Calloway.
She’s now calling on the public to find someone to take the gym over for the kids.
“We are the only option for most special needs families for drop-off, for camps, to have a neuro-typical experience for a lot of things that they just can't find in an hour radius. It sucks, but we have to guess like goodbye for now,” said Calloway.
