FOX 7 Discussion: Austin City Councilmember Greg Casar on effort to decriminalize small marijuana possession

Austin City Councilmember Greg Casar joins Marcel Clarke to discuss his proposal to end low-level marijuana arrests and fines throughout Austin.

Austin City Council is looking to decriminalize low-level marijuana possessions as soon as Thursday.

The resolution, sponsored by councilmember Greg Casar is gaining traction among other councilmembers and community activists.

Last summer, Texas legalized hemp, which comes from the cannabis plant, but the issue is the ability to test if a substance is hemp or marijuana.

The city council says arresting people for small possession of marijuana is a waste of time, especially with no resources available to provide the needed testing to convict, and by passing this resolution, taxpayer dollars will be better spent.
