Matthew McConaughey and boxer Canelo Alvarez team up for Spanish language COVID-19 PSA

Matthew McConaughey has been working to spread the message of the importance of wearing face coverings and masks during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic and now he's teamed up with world champion Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez for a new PSA that's targeting Spanish-speaking communities.

The PSA is titled "El Corona en la Lona" and the two ask people to protect themselves and others in the fight against COVID-19. They're urging people to stay home, but if it's not possible, wear a mask or bandana to protect family, friends and the community.

McConaughey says he was prompted to make the PSA after he was alerted by Austin Mayor Steve Adler that the message about wearing face masks and coverings was not effectively reaching the Hispanic community.

"I started doing research and found that the message also wasn’t sufficiently getting to the Hispanic population in Texas, the United States and in Mexico.  I needed to find a face and a voice that Hispanic communities could look-up and would listen to, so I reached out to Canelo and told him what I wanted to do, and fortunately he immediately agreed," stated McConaughey in a news release.

Alvarez says it was "an easy yes" when he was contacted by McConaughey to do the PSA.

"For me being able to reach the Spanish speaking community in a way that can help keep us safer during these times is very important. We hope together we can spread the message of wearing a face covering to everyone,” Alvarez says.

While many know McConaughey, some may not be familiar with Alvarez.

McConaughey also made a viral video concerning bandanas earlier this month where he portrayed the character of bounty hunter Bobby Bandito.
