San Marcos HS teacher accused of inappropriate relationship with student

A high school teacher for the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District has been accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 17-year-old female student. An arrest warrant has been issued for 27-year-old Ian Michael Madden. He has been charged with having an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student, a second-degree felony.

Madden has retained an attorney, Willie Schmerler, but has yet to turn himself in to authorities. 

According to the San Marcos Police Department, a police officer was dispatched to the San Marcos High School on Thursday, January 24 for a report of an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student. Two students had notified a coach at the high school about the relationship. 

Madden is a history/government teacher and boys basketball coach at the high school.

Once notified, SMCISD started an investigation and contacted SMPD. During the investigation and forensic interview, the student admitted to several incidents of sexual intercourse over a period of two months. In a separate interview with Madden, he also admitted to the sexual intercourse.  

Numerous text messages and photos of the two were located on the victim’s cell phone that was seized in the investigation. According to SMCISD, Madden was suspended from employment beginning on Friday, January 25, 2019. An arrest warrant was issued for Madden on Friday, February 15.
