Suspect dies after officer-involved shooting in Round Rock
Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in a Round Rock neighborhood early Saturday. The shooting happened at Red Rock Drive and Apache Trail around 3 a.m.
An official with the Round Rock Police Department said a man was attempting to break into cars when Round Rock police officers confronted him. Police said the suspect, identified as 21-year-old Richard Rangel, pulled a gun.
Rangel fired at the police officers who were trying to wrestle the gun away from him.
According to Round Rock Police Lieutenant Jimmy Keyes, officers fired back, striking Rangel and wounding him. Rangel was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
“Officers did sustain minor injuries but were checked at the scene by medical personal,” said Keyes. A resident whose car was almost broken into said if it wasn't for her neighbor’s surveillance video and quick thinking things could have been worse.
"His surveillance camera’s alerted him that somebody was on his property and he saw the man walking away from his house over to our property,” said Ofelia Melendez. “It was very serious and very scary, you know, but out of all this the positive that came out is how neighbors take care of each other.” According to police the suspect had a warrant out for his arrest.
