Rep. Steve Scalise returns to field for Congressional baseball practice nearly 1 year after shooting

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Representative Steve Scalise is back out on the ball field, almost a year since a gunman opened fire at the Congressional baseball team practice in Alexandria, that left the House Majority Whip from Louisiana and three others wounded.

Senator Jeff Flake from Arizona tweeted a photo of his colleague. [Scalise] "back on the field this morning. This does my heart good."

Scalise retweeted Flake, saying "Feels good to be back with the team!"

Rep. Brad Wenstrop from Ohio also posted a photo of himself with Scalise, tweeting "Welcome Back."

Republican lawmakers returned to the field in April for their first Congressional Baseball Game practice since the 2017 shooting.

Scalise was unable to attend the first practice as he was undergoing a planned follow-up surgery.

The shooting happened on June 14, 2017 at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park at about 7:10 a.m. and involved a lone gunman armed with a rifle who opened fire. The gunman died in the exchange of gunfire.

U.S. Capitol Police said officers who were part of Scalise's security detail returned fire, wounding the shooter who was identified by the FBI as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson of Belleville, Illinois.
