Donations needed, violent crime and accidents lead to blood shortage in Austin area

The nonprofit community blood center, We Are Blood, is experiencing a critical shortage in blood donations and is asking the community for support in replenishing their blood bank stores. According to We Are Blood, the critical shortage in blood comes after a series of accidents and incidents affecting local patients within their 10-county service area.

The nonprofit has been receiving fewer donations due to inclement weather and allergies that have impacted donors. O negative and O positive donors are particularly needed to ensure patients can receive life-saving care, according to the nonprofit.

Blood donations can be made at any three locations in North Lamar, Round Rock, and South Austin.

Donating whole blood generally takes less than an hour and appointments can be made any day of the week.
